The range

The Seiko 5 Actus is a “sub-range” of the Seiko 5 series. They were marketed from 1969 to ca. 1978 in Japan only (this is a so called JDM – Japanese Domestic Market – product.)

Like every Seiko 5, it features the day and date display, it is water resistant and the movement is automatic. The Actus range is the top of the line “5” at that time. All cases were made of stainless steel (sometimes gold plated too, and very rarely black PVDed), most of the models had a glass crystal.

Concerning the movements, it could be a 7019 21 jewels or a 6106 23 or 25 jewels (for the Actus SS). Both had a day and date quickset.

From 1976 on, Seiko abandonned the “5” and the range became simply “Seiko Actus”. Both movements were replaced by the 6306, which was an evolution of the 6106.

Concerning the design, we can make an easy parallel with the Lord Matic range, the first models were quite classical, but from 1971-1972 on, the dials became coloured, the cases had different shapes (oval, rectangle), the crystal were often facetted.

Finally, all these watches were originally fitted with a stainless steel bracelet, the clasp having the “Seiko 5 Actus” signature.

The brand

Introducing Seiko would be useless, it is the most important manufacturer in the world. Founded 120 years ago, it really begun to be a leader in the 60’s/70’s thanks to their automatic watches and of course with their quartz models.
Seiko invented many concepts (analogic and LCD quartz, Kinetic watches, Spring Drive, etc) and marketed all sorts of designs. Its range of watches is incredibly wide, answering almost all budget, design or quality questions.
