Among the Seamaster family, the Cosmic is the personification of the design and culture change that occured in the second half of the 60s. First of all, its name, Cosmic, reminds surely the period that we now call the “space age” and during which the space race reached its climax. Then, where the straight Seamaster was a serious watch, with very standard designs, the Cosmic introduced more sophisticated cases, bi-tone dials and more original hour markers.
We will focus on this page on the 166.022 model, characterized by its squarish cushion sunburst case. The watch was available in time-only, date or day and date display, as it was the rule for most of the models marketed at that time, whatever the manufacturer.

Presentation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first element to draw our attention is of course the case, with its strangely designed lugs. The case looks a little bit like a butterfly. Despite its limited diametre, the watch has a very good presence on the wrist.

The dial & hands<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The dial of the 166.022 is always composed in a similar way : the logo and the mention automatic centred on the upper half and Seamaster Cosmic on two lines on the bottom half. The hour markers are metallic, they can be thin batons or thicker rectangles.
The dials could be champagne, dark grey, silver, deep blue or two-toned.
The hands are usually pencil-typed, with a strip of black and a strip of luminous matter, as it was the case on many Omega models. More rarely, the hands can be dauphines.
The day and date window is always located at 3 o’clock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The case <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The 166.022 case is a monobloc case. To access the movement, you have to pull away the split stem and take the crystal off. That solution was quite standard at that time, many manufacturers adopted it to improve the water tightness of their watches (Seiko with the LM, 56KS, 52KS, 56GS, Longines with the Ultra Chron, etc.). The dimensions are 34 mm x 36 mm. It might seem quite small but area covered by the case is big thanks to its shape. The round part of the case is radially brushed, the lugs are generally polished. On some models, the lugs are brushed as well but more on a tangential way. The case was available in gold plated as well.
The crystal is a classical acrylic with a tension ring. The crown is linked to a split stem and is Omega signed.
Most of the Cosmic 166.022 you will find have a leather band (the buckle should be signed) but some have a dedicated steel bracelet with an end link fitting the shape of the case (was it an option ?).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The movement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Three movements were available, depending on the features they provided. The Omega 552 for the time-only model, Omega 565 for the date model and Omega 752 for the day and date model. All beat at 19,800 A\/h and have 24 jewels. The day quickset is triggered by pulling the crown. These movements are quite old fashioned compared to what Longines or Seiko had to propose but they are very reliable, easy to maintain and precise.

In conclusion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This 166.022 Seamaster Cosmic is my favorite among the Cosmic because I especially like its case. Its shape is probably unique and very attractive.
